Understand the backing model

Fiat-backed tokens depend on issuer arrangements and reserve assets. Crypto-collateralized systems depend on collateral quality, liquidation rules and oracles. Algorithmic designs may rely on incentives that weaken when confidence falls.

Read reserve disclosures

Check assets, maturity, custodians, concentration and report dates. An attestation is not always a full financial-statement audit. Look for clear methodology and disclosed limitations.

Redemption and liquidity

Direct redemption may require identity checks, minimum amounts or geographic eligibility. Retail users may rely on secondary markets, where a token can trade below its target during stress. Bridges, contracts and chain outages add separate risks.

If a depeg occurs

Verify the token and venue, compare independent markets, read official issuer statements and check redemption status. Never trust unsolicited recovery addresses or support messages. Stablecoins still carry counterparty, legal, technical and liquidity risk.
